Adding a Touch of Luxury

If you’re shopping for new premium bedsheets, you’ll see a variety of terms used that may be unfamiliar to you. A popular quality rating for cotton sheets is its thread count, which refers to the density of threads used in a square inch of fabric.

What does thread count actually mean? Does it matter? If so, what is the best thread count for sheets which is printed or which is in solids? We’ll break down each of these topics and more.

What is thread count?

Thread count is used as a rough indicator of the softness and feel of a fabric, however not the only consideration when it comes to the overall quality of a set of sheets.

It is a measure of how many threads are woven into one square inch of fabric. The yarn is woven in a crisscross pattern with the vertical strands being referred to as warp weave, and the horizontal pieces are called weft weave.

When you add up the warp and weft yarns, you get the total number.

What Matters?

Thread count is used as a rough indicator of the softness and feel of a fabric, however not the only consideration when it comes to the overall quality of a set of sheets. The quality of the yarns or threads used is often more important than the quantity of threads, or thread count.

What is a Ply?

One should opt for bedsheet which offers softness and breathability.

A “ply” is a fibre that can be combined into a single thread. Effectively, bed sheet thread count only matters when you are talking about 1-ply, with multi-ply yarns much smaller, less breathable, and less durable than single-ply threads

The best thread count and ply for sheets?

"“Basic quality" bedding of linen has a thread count of 132 to 144, "good quality" bedding has a thread count of 180 to 220, "Excellent quality" fabric has a thread count beyond 300. Meanwhile, at the upper end of the spectrum, the best thread count for bedding comes in 500-600. Above 600 TC, single ply is used which degrades the quality of sheets and should not be opted for.

Key point to be noted is that as thread count increases, breathability of sheets decreases. Hence one should opt for bedsheet which offers softness and breathability. 300-350 TC offers this.

Also, Printed Bedsheets can be made upto thread count of 300-350 only due to cotton fabric texture. For higher thread count only solid colors bedsheets are manufactured and available.
